Love Joy Dadulo Richards, one of six HBCU Organ and Tissue Donation Advocacy Scholarship winners, is a Licensed Practical Nurse and a student at the University of the Virgin Islands pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. As a dialysis nurse, Love Joy has seen the incredible impact of organ donation on the lives of her patients and their families.

MEET THE WINNER: Ashis Dhakal

Ashis Dhakal, a senior from Salt Lake City, made difficult decisions alongside his family to escape poverty and illness, and pursue a better life. Relocating as a refugee was challenging as he faced inequity in a Nepali refugee camp, with limited access to basic needs. Motivated by his own experiences and to uphold his value of service, Ashis decided it was his mission to make a difference in the lives of those affected by extreme poverty. Richie’s Spirit Foundation recognizes Ashis Dhakal as the First Place Winner of the 2021 Significant Challenge Scholarship!

MEET THE FINALIST: Nathan Marohn

Years of treatment and multiple surgeries did not stop Nathan Marohn, a graduating senior from Stevensville, Michigan, from fulfilling his role as a community leader. With a motivation to transform lives, he resiliently met the challenges of his medical condition to advocate for the Ulcerative Colitis community. Richie’s Spirit Foundation recognizes Nathan as the Second Place Winner for the 2021 Significant Challenge Scholarship.

MEET THE FINALIST: Alexandra Crocker

After realizing there were no established programs to connect children with chronic illnesses like her, Alexandra Crocker dedicated her time to build a support system for others who were in search of acceptance and encouragement throughout their health journey. From this deep-willed mission to transform the lives of families like hers, Fighting H.A.R.D was born to “provide physical, emotional, social, and financial help to families of children impacted by rare diseases and chronic illnesses.” Read more about Alexandra’s story!

The Final Round: Richie's Spirit Foundation Announces Scholarship Finalists

Richie's Spirit Foundation's volunteer Scholarship Review Committee has selected the top 10 finalists from a pool of more than 2,600 applicants for the 2017 Significant Challenge College Scholarship. Judges will review the final candidates to award $3,500 in scholarships to three recipients. An announcement of the winners is expected in May.

Over the next few weeks, the Foundation will feature student profiles of the final candidates giving donors, supporters and volunteers an in depth look at these worthy individuals.

The purpose of the Richie's Spirit Foundation Scholarship Program is to honor Richie's memory by supporting the pursuit of higher education by candidates with a similar zest for life. Each applicant is asked to share a significant life challenge and how they have been able to overcome the major obstacle. While each individual story is different, many of these students share similar qualities to Richie - to live life with a positive spirit regardless of the adversities life may bring.

The Richie's Spirit Foundation Board of Directors would like to congratulate the top 10 finalists for their accomplishments and would also like to acknowledge all applicants for sharing their stories. Stay tuned for our finalist profiles!

2017 Significant Challenge College Scholarship Application Now Open

Starting Tuesday, November 15, 2016, Richie's Spirit Foundation will begin to accept applications for its 2017 Significant Challenge College Scholarship Program.  The Foundation will award $3,500 to the top three applicants who demonstrate leadership, character, and initiative in school and community affairs and merits academic achievement.  Winners will be announced in the Spring of 2017.

The 2016 application cycle welcomed a record 2,500 applicants with winners receiving $3,500 in scholarships for their college education.  Please click here to learn more about our past recipients.  

The 2017 application is open to all graduating seniors who plan to attend vocational school, community college or a four-year university during the 2017-2018 school year.  For more information, please visit our College Scholarship Program page.

 

Richie's Spirit Foundation Named Official Charity Partner for 2016 Rock N' Roll Marathon Series

For the second year in a row, Richie's Spirit Foundation has been named an official charity partner of the Rock N' Roll Marathon Series.  This year, Team Richie will take on three cities,  Brooklyn, Dallas and Philadelphia, as members raise funds to promote organ donation.

Last year, five runners joined Team Richie for the Rock N' Roll Brooklyn Half Marathon.  Each runner took on 13.1 miles while raising funding and awareness for organ donation.  Together, the team exceeding their goal and raised more than $6,500 for RSF!

Team Richie invites runners 16 years of age and older to join at one or more of the events.  In exchanged for guaranteed entry, runners are asked to raise a minimum of $750.00.  Team Richie members will be provided with detailed training regimens, opportunities for training runs, and a post-race brunch.

A Record 2,500 Applications Received for 2016 College Scholarship Progra

The 2016 Richie's Spirit Foundation (RSF) Significant Challenge College Scholarship Program received a record 2,500 applications from high school seniors from across the country.  RSF will award three (3) grants totaling $3,500 recognizing first place ($2,000), runner-up ($1,000) and honorable mention ($500).  Winners will be announced in the Spring of 2016.
